The idea is different and strange but relatively well implemented. Although not as engaging as I would have liked.
It gets a bit boring in some places, but there is the fantastic score, dreamlike atmosphere, beautiful locations and some shock value.
Overall, this is another worthy representative of sleazy 70s and 80s Italian cinema, butonly for fans of weird exploitation flicks.

‘Bestialità’ (also known under the brillant English title 'Dog Lay Afternoon') is has a wonderfully lurid premise. The opening scene doesn't waste any time to show us everything you expect from the title and poster in an intro that's pure shock value, but it turns into something slightly more subtle afterwards. For the most part this isn't all out doggie-love and more of an erotic drama that at times feels like one of Jess Franco's sexploitation meditations. Though the dog is a main character and obviously has relations with some of the female cast, it's never all that graphic except for two scenes, but those sure are memorable and deliver the desired effect.
It's pretty curious that this was apparently… -

Lie down with dogs, end up with fleas... along with a few other surprises 🐶
This was something all right. Co-written and directed by Luigi Montefiori, aka George Eastman, aka the dude who eats his own guts in Antropophagus. A young girl witnesses her mother having "relations" with the family dog, papa comes in and burns the castle to the ground, and now the girl is older - a wandering mute nymphomaniac with a dog all her own. How's that for childhood trauma!
Unfortunately(?) most of the story focuses on an older couple floundering in a midlife crisis, trying to reignite the flame, and getting more than they bargained for in their new young lover. It's pretty dull softcore erotica…

AKA Beastiality...though Dog Lay Afternoon is a highly amusing title.
So last night I was in the mood for a bit of cinematic whatthefuckery and fell upon this Italian, shall we call it soft-porn, though I'm not sure it even qualifies as that. It's written, not directed as stated on letterboxd, by Italian B-movie legend George Eastman, so this sounded like it would be just the whackadoodle thing I was looking for, as it turns out it was more wankapoodle!
So we kick off with little Jeanine watching the family pet doberman fucking her mum, purely consensual I might add, before dad bursts in and catches them hiding the hot dog. Dad ties the dog up and sets fire to… -

Always heard about it. Never seen it. It's sleazy alright. The opening shows a husband burning a dog because his wife was having sex with the animal. It then flashes forward into the future. We now follow a married couple that is in a crisis. A mysterious girl with a Doberman appears and lights up the flame of love and lust in the couple's life once again. It's very sleazy but also has a vacation-like island setting and weird surreal party scenes. The cast is well stacked too.

It's a movie, alright. But beyond the obvious shock factor it's going for in the marketing and setup, there's something that resonates here on a melancholy level. That a marriage is so lifeless that it needs to use and spit out a figure of innocence in order to sustain itself strikes a sad tone. And by capping the film off in a way that the girl is painted as a tragic figure, and leaving you a bit haunted by the final closing minutes. The music score here is almost too good for the film, but it hits at the exact right times to heighten the emotional beats when it's used.

Structured like a gothic horror story (complete with a burnt down castle—which the locals refer to as “Inferno”—that serves as the site of historical trauma) except the “monster” here is not a ghost or a vampire but instead a girl who likes to fuck her dog. Something’s probably wrong with me, but I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Review by Bernd Plissken ★

With a title like, Bestiality (or Dog Lay Afternoon?!), you would think this movie would be way more sleazy. It starts out strong with mom being spied on by daughter as she's having sex with the family doberman pincer. But then it cuts to modern day, following an older couple who are working out their sexual conflicts, while vacationing at a cliff side resort with a bunch of swingers. Both become enamored with a young woman who keeps appearing on the rocks with a suspicious looking DOBERMAN PINCIER at her side. So you keep expecting something sleazy to happen. Like, bring it on! Dog lay afternoon! But it doesn't really happen. There's mostly conversations between swingers, and the couple lamenting…
